Explain how a red blood cell is adapted for the transport of oxygen.
Red blood cells have a biconcave shape which gives them a large surface area to volume ratio, so oxygen can be loaded and unloaded quickly. They have no nucleus, leaving more room to be packed with haemoglobin, and they are small and flexible so they can squeeze through narrow capillaries.
